Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth (FBP) is comprised of more than 2,000 workers dedicated to the safe environmental cleanup of the Portsmouth site to prepare the land for reindustrialization.

As the Department of Energy (DOE) cleanup contractor, Fluor-BWXT is cleaning up environmental media (e.g., soil, water, air, plants) that were impacted by the site operations to protect human health and the environment in accordance with cleanup levels set and approved by DOE and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA).
Fluor-BWXT is performing cleanup of groundwater plumes contaminated primarily with the degreasing solvent trichloroethylene (TCE), which was used during production years to clean uranium enrichment process equipment.. Five areas or plumes of groundwater affected by TCE are currently being managed by pump and treat, oxidant injection and a slurry wall technology.
Fluor-BWXT also remediates soil contaminated by uranium enrichment operations. This soil may be contaminated with the TCE degreasing solvent, radionuclides, heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyls, a hazardous substance found in cooling fluids.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have agreed upon a plan for the disposition of more than two million cubic yards of waste that would be generated from the decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio.
