Fluor-BWXT Donation Aimed at Inspiring Young Readers

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio -- July 22, 2021 -- Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth (FBP) has donated $2,000 to help inspire young readers in southern Ohio. This year, Portsmouth’s Books Build Bridges committee will be using the money toward the purchase of a plot-twisting dystopian novel for students in Scioto County.

Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth representatives recently met with Books Build Bridges committee members to discuss plans for the next literacy program. Approximately 1,000 copies of “Scythe” will go to participating school districts for 10th graders. It is the first book in a trilogy by award-winning author Neal Shusterman. In “Scythe,” key players learn the heavy price of having a perfect world. After reading the book, students will have the opportunity to meet a successful Ohio author.

FBP’s Business Services Director Peggy Davis hopes the experience encourages students to keep reading.

“My youngest child had a difficult time with reading,” Davis said. “He was able to participate in a program that allowed him to interact differently with reading, and I mark that as a turning point for him.  Many of us have different learning styles and by having exposure to many different avenues, individuals are allowed opportunities to create a spark.  I hope that this program offers that spark to all of the participants.”

Program sponsors include the Portsmouth Rotary Club, Portsmouth Public Library, Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth, Ohio Arts Council, Shawnee State University, and the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center (ESC).

Sharee Price is the coordinator for the ESC Gifted Services in Portsmouth and serves as a committee member and liaison between schools and the Books Build Bridges committee.

“Our goal is getting kids to care about reading and putting books in hands of kids,” said Sharee Price, coordinator for the ESC Gifted Services in Portsmouth, committee member and liaison between schools and the committee. “We are thankful to all of our sponsors and want to express our thanks to Fluor and the steering committee for this donation.”
